Do you Know... What finger should your engagement ring be worn on?

Do you know which finger you wear your engagement ring on? Why does it get worn on that finger? The engagement ring is an age-old promise of commitment to enter into a lifelong relationship. But when the moment comes to accept the proposal, it’s essential to know which finger to wear your engagement ring on.

Different Countries - Different Fingers

Depending on where you live, engagement rings can be worn on different fingers. If you’re in Australia, America or most European countries, traditionally you wear your engagement ring on the fourth finger on the left hand. This can be traced back to the Ancient Romans, who believed that this finger had a vein that ran directly to the heart.

Since the heart is the centre of your emotions, it’s only appropriate for the engagement ring to be here. As we now know there is no such vein, however, it’s the sentiment that was proven truly special.

If you’re in Russia, Germany, Norway or India, the engagement ring is worn on the right hand. As the left hand was considered unlucky, these cultures believe the right hand should be adorned with this diamond engagement ring.

In Sweden and Chile, not only do the brides-to-be receive engagement rings, men wear them as well. In Chile, the men wear them on the right hand until marriage, when they are exchanged on to the left.

Some may think only wedding bands are exchanged during the ceremony. However, in China, brides and grooms exchange other goods, like money, instead of engagement rings.

Wondering which finger to wear your wedding ring ON?

The wedding ring sits on the same finger as your engagement ring. In Australia this is usually on the left hand ring finger. It's traditional to wear the engagement and the wedding rings together.

Gerard McCabe - Engagement Ring Set

Is the wedding band on top or bottom?

Many women wear their engagement ring ‘on top’ of their wedding ring - meaning the wedding band is placed on the finger first. But why?  One reason is the old British superstition - which says that a wedding ring must never be taken off. A more romantic take is that the wedding ring sits closest to your heart, symbolising it’s special meaning.

Gerard McCabe - Classic Set - Engagement Ring

Do you wear your engagement ring when you walk down the aisle?

During the wedding ceremony, it is normal for a bride to put her engagement ring temporarily on their right hand - leaving the left hand free for the wedding ring.

Once the nuptials have been performed, the bride would slide her engagement ring ‘on top’ of the new wedding band to ‘seal it’ in place.
