HOW TO CHOOSE A DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING

Diamonds, Engagement Rings, Advice & Information Posted by Gerard McCabe on 09/05/2022

On the hunt for the perfect engagement ring? You're probably trying to narrow down your partner's style, or some idea of their 'dream ring'. Our tip is to start with the style and end with choosing the diamond!

GERARD McCABE's STEPS TO CHOOSING A DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING:

1. Choose an engagement ring style: Perhaps it's a solitaire, halo, or cluster setting, embellished with engraving or pattern work, or maybe you opt for an antique ring.

2. Choose a metal: Some popular choices are gold, in either white, yellow, or rose, or platinum.

3. Choose your diamond shape: round, oval, pear, marquise, emerald, radiant, princess, cushion, or a combination!

4. Future-proof your diamond engagement ring: How will it look with a wedding or eternity ring?

FOCUS ON DESIGN: Choose AN ENGAGEMENT Ring Style

Not sure where to start? We always recommend looking at your partner's existing jewellery for clues about their preferred style. There's also a good chance your partner has been browsing around online, looking for inspiration of their own - so don't be afraid to ask what they think of the rings you see in passing.

Remember though, her best friends and closest relatives might also have a pretty accurate understanding of her likes and dislikes! Getting some 'nearest and dearest' in on the investigation, as long as they can keep a secret, is the perfect way to pinpoint the vision your partner has in mind.

SET THE TONE: Select A Metal

Knowing the kind of jewellery your partner already wears will also help you identify a suitable metal. Does she wear cool or warm-toned jewellery? What suits her skin tone? If she often mixes and matches her jewellery perhaps a design that incorporates multiple colours of gold would suit her.Gerard McCabe Infinity Rings

DISCOVER VARIETY: CHOOSE Your Diamond Shape
Settling on a specific diamond shape can be somewhat tricky! For maximum sparkle, go for a round, radiant, or princess-cut diamond. For something more chic, and notably 'unique', a marquise or pear-cut diamond may just call your name. If in doubt, classic cuts like oval or emerald tend to be fan favourites. This process is slightly more intuitive, and calls for an understanding of your partner's 'essence'. To learn more about diamond shapes, we have a complete rundown here!
