THE JEWELLERY DESIGN DIARIES: EMERALD LYRE RING

Precious Gems, Design Inspiration Posted by Gerard McCabe on 04/05/2017

Our designer Nazanin, is driven by creativity. Her latest creation is stunning and coincides with the month of May. The month of the Emerald. In this blog we share with you some of her research and design notes.

The Story of the Lyre

The Lyre or Harp is the instrument invented by Hermes and given to Apollo his half-brother, who in turn gave it to his son Orpheus, the musician of the Argonauts. In Greek mythology, the walls of Thebes were said to have been constructed by the skill of a musician called Amphion and his lyre. The form of lyre is a very ancient symbol for the musical arts. Orpheus also had the power to move stones by the playing of his lyre.

The fundamental difference between a lyre and a harp, is that in a harp, the strings enter directly into the hollow body of the instrument, whereas on a lyre, the strings pass over a bridge, which transmits the vibrations of the strings to the body of the instrument – just as on a modern guitar.

Emeralds are very rich stones. I imagine the woman who wears emeralds to be regal - she possesses style and grace -  Nazanin

This design is inspired by Lyre or harp which is visible on the side view. The leaves around it represent life and fertility. The element of this ring that I love the most is the unique claw design which completes the perfection in this design. It was a challenge to achieve the design in claws and setting the stone.

The bright green emerald is over 3 carats in size and the colour is accented by the yellow gold, ornate, fleur de lis claw work. The beautiful pear shape diamonds on either side are set in a contrasting white gold and here the floral theme continues below in the setting work.

The final special touch is a delicate curved kick under the upswept shoulders of the band. This is a gorgeous designer ring, a one of a kind gift. A masterpiece that can be enjoyed from all angles.
