True love is said to be like the strongest of knots - unbreakable, not easily unravelled, and will stand the test of time. A lovers knot can represent the promises and vows we make. Each thread in the rope or chord replicates the things that are shared between just those two people.

A knot has much symbolism tied to it, particularly when it symbolises true love. The True Lovers Knot is where two pieces come together in a movable but unbreakable tie. However, not many couples nowadays will exchange an intricate knot as a sign of their everlasting love. Many antique pieces of jewellery will feature the True Lovers Knot, as legends say they were commonly given as a token of love to a romantic partner. So where did the concept of this knot come from?

The tradition of the True Lovers Knot is said to have come about in the early 19th century when this type of jewellery was commonly given to young lovers. The jewellery was commonly made of rope, cord or non-precious metals. With each knot being unique, it was a gift that was often given by sailors who were leaving their lovers for a period of time. Given that sailors generally have excellent knotting skills, it was a perfect fit. It was once common for sailors' wedding rings, where gold wire was moulded to incorporate the romantic knot. The finished ring would be comprised of two wires, each flexible to move about the other yet nevertheless inseparable. Other jewellery, such as necklaces or more commonly bracelets, would be fashioned from two ropes or cords.

Another way this classic knot aided lovers, was to determine if a young couple's love would last. To do this, each lover would take a small limb of a tree and tie a True Lovers Knot. If the knot held and grew for approximately a year, their love would stay true.
