Coinciding with the month of May, emerald is gaining popularity amongst jewellers and designers alike.
The rich green colour of this birthstone is considered to be a symbol of rebirth and love. One of the rarest gemstones, emerald was traditionally used in Victorian jewellery but has gained prominence in recent years. Thinking about an emerald design? Here's everything we know and love about this enchanting gemstone!
Originally, the name ‘Emerald’ passed through four languages before reaching its final pronunciation. Stemming from the Greek word 'smargados', meaning ‘green gem’, which developed with the Latin word 'smargedus', and then continued to evolve to the French word 'esmeraude'. Middle English transformed the word into emeraude, and today, as language has evolved, we now have ‘Emerald’.

According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), an emerald’s colour depends on its mine location. Colombian emeralds are said to have a warmer and more intense pure green colour, while Zambian emeralds are said to have a cooler, more bluish-green colour.
The typical inclusions within emeralds allow jewellers to determine whether they are naturally made or synthetic, and pinpoint where they were mined.
"They’re an interesting stone, one of the big threes; sapphires, rubies and emeralds. They’re unique, with their striking colour their most important feature" - Gerard McCabe
In 2018, our in-house designer created the Emerald Lyre Ring, which combined the striking nature of an emerald with the glistening aura of pear-cut diamonds. Accented by yellow gold, and fleur de lis claw work, the three-carat emerald sits proudly in the centre of this beautiful dress ring. A touching nod for a musician, the Lyre Ring featured the curves and lines of a lyre, the ancient Greek string instrument.
"Emeralds are very rich stones, I imagine the woman who wears emeralds to be regal - she possesses style and grace" - Design Director, Nazanin
Most of our emerald designs incorporate beautiful diamonds, as they complement the sparkle of the glistening rich green. The vibrant, natural colour of these gemstones is something only one could dream of - and they make for a truly sentimental gift for a May birthday or special occasion.
