September's birthstone, sapphire has been admired for centuries.

The gemstone is well known for its vibrant, electric blue colour, however, this birthstone has more to offer than just that! With a rainbow of possibilities for birthday and anniversary gifts alike, here's everything you need to know about this regal gem.

Symbolically, sapphire represents sincerity, truth, faithfulness, and nobility. For over a hundred years, sapphires have been worn by royalty. The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that wearing sapphires shielded them from harm and envy, while priests from the Middle Ages wore sapphires to represent the heavens.

“Sapphire”, derived from the Latin and Greek words sapphirus and sappheiros, is a member of the Corundum gemstone family. While it is little known, sapphires also come in shades of pink, peach, orange, yellow, green, teal, purple, black, and white.

Due to their durability and romantic essence, sapphire also makes for a perfect engagement ring gemstone. Featured in both our Aura and Tria collections, sapphire is ideal for celebrating life's most special moments.

In more recent years, sapphires have been the precious gem of choice among celebrities, one of the most coveted being the 12ct sapphire engagement ring chosen by the late Princess Diana, now worn by the new Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton. Other stars that adore electric sapphires are Victoria Beckham, Penelope Cruz, and Elizabeth Taylor.

History will always remember the Blue Giant of the Orient, a whopping 466 carats, which is the largest faceted sapphire in the world. Shrouded in mystery, the precious gem disappeared in 1907, only re-emerging this century.

At Gerard McCabe, there's no denying our love for sapphires!

One of our most iconic sapphire collections, titled 'Kaleidoscope', is designed to capture the individuality of natural sapphires, creating rainbows of colour that tell their own story of movement and exploration. Another one of our most-loved sapphire collections, titled 'Cirque', embraces the beauty and variety of coloured sapphires and diamonds, in a celebration of its theatrical nature.

Of course however, for those born in September, sapphire has added sentiment. Whether you're hoping to build a suite of sapphire designs, or indulge in a one-of-a-kind statement piece, sapphire jewellery is the ultimate gift, guaranteed to be cherished for years to come.

The Gerard McCabe team invite you to discover these glorious gemstones at either of our Adelaide jewellery stores, or explore our current Cirque and Kaleidoscope collections in our online store!
