WHAT MAKES A RING AN ENGAGEMENT RING?

Diamonds, Precious Gems, Engagement Rings Posted by Gerard McCabe on 13/03/2019

When it comes to selecting an engagement ring options are endless. From the classic solitaire design, to vintage interpretations, there are an array of choices. That being said, many wonder whether any ring or gemstone can be an engagement ring?

Diamonds are traditionally popular for engagement rings, following their inception into European aristocracy and nobility in the late 15th century. It was the durability of a diamond that conveyed the meaning that marriage is forever. However, over the years, many have looked for alternative gemstones for proposals.

Emeralds

Emeralds are considered one of the four world’s most precious stones, alongside sapphires, diamonds and rubies. They are a softer gem than the other three, and more prone to chips and damage.  They must be worn with extreme care if selected to be an engagement ring. As an engagement ring, popularity soared following the Kennedy’s proposal. Jackie Kennedy received a breathtaking 2.88ct Diamond and 2.84 Emerald Ring from her husband John F. Kennedy. The ring, crafted by Paris-based jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels, the ring was beautifully accented by white glistening diamonds.

Sapphires

A Sapphire’s value is primarily based on its colour, with the most desirable colour a rich cornflower blue that is neither too dark nor too inky. Following Princess Diana’s proposal to Prince Charles and the gifting of the Garrard & Co 18ct Ceylon Sapphire and diamond ring, coloured gemstone engagement rings became a popular choice. Today, the Duchess of Cambridge wears the family heirloom, with the sapphire engagement ring continuing to be a top pick for bride’s around the world.

Rubies

The deep red of a Ruby has long made it a popular choice for engagement rings. Although natural rubies have imperfections, if the stone is cut correctly, the inclusions can increase the rarity and value of the stone. As an engagement ring, the adornment of diamonds alongside the ruby further enhances the magical colour that radiates from the gemstone. Jessica Simpson received a breathtaking 4ct ruby ring from her partner, Eric Johnson. A ruby engagement ring is a popular option for women born in July and has long been a popular choice.
