WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING AN OVAL CUT DIAMOND

Design Inspiration, Engagement Rings Posted by Gerard McCabe on 23/07/2018

Have you been looking at a classic round cut diamond? Maybe something a little more unique like a pear cut - or has an oval cut diamond caught your eye? Oval cut diamonds have gained popularity with celebrities and for many reasons.

We thought it might be useful to take a look at the unique composition of these oval cut diamonds.

Oval cut diamonds have rounded edges, and great face up dimensions which allows greater light to enter the diamond. The elongated shape can make the diamond appear larger. Because of the shape of oval cut, this shape will make the hand and fingers of the wearer appear slimmer.
It’s important before you buy your oval cut diamond, that you think about the length to width ratio. This will help you gauge how narrow or wide the diamond is. The greater length to width, the longer and skinnier the diamond will be. Whilst the lower length to width ratio, gives you a rounder, more circular gem.

They are perfect for someone who is looking for the brilliance of a round diamond, but would prefer something a little more unique.

Gemological Institute of America

It's important to note the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) does not provide cut grading for oval cut diamonds. Your jeweller should understand the best oval diamond cut specifications, and ways to ensure brilliance and fire. The beauty of oval cut diamond is sometimes determined by what you, the wearer (or gifter) see. We do however recommend a diamond expert assist you in this process.

Along with the cut of you oval diamond, it’s important that you’re aware of the Bow-Tie effect. This effect occurs when light doesn’t bounce back in the middle of the diamond, due to the way the stone is cut. Although some consider this to be the beauty of the oval cut, you don’t want the effect to be too severe. The only way to gauge its severity is through your own visual inspection.
Popular Engagement Ring Settings for Oval Cut Diamonds

When you’ve decided that an oval cut diamond is the one you’re after, you’ll then have to consider its setting. With each style, you’ll notice a different look.

 Halo Setting

This involves a ‘halo’ of smaller diamonds around the oval centre stone. This effect accentuates the shape, and makes the diamond appear larger. The surround of white diamonds only further enhances the beauty of the centre stone. The Halo effect is a standout style no matter the cut or colour of the diamond.

 Side Stones

Side stones added to an oval diamond setting can enhance the shape of the oval diamond. A beautiful addition to your engagement ring and a popular choice for many.

The side stones don't have to be the same shape to enhance the beauty of the oval. In our Embrace engagement ring design, marquise and round diamonds are used to create a uniquely beautiful ring.
