A beautiful antique bangle, featuring hand engraved foliation and a raised cursive Mizpah. But one would be left wondering what the meaning is behind this inscription, and the story behind this intricate bangle…
Having been around for centuries, the term Mizpah, is found in the Bible in chapter Genesis chapter 31, verse 49. A Hebrew word, Mizpah refers to a watchpost symbolising a place of sanctuary, “The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent from one another”.
As time has passed, the term has evolved and become a gift of good fortune, offering a safe return to those who are apart. It is a symbol, encouraging those to have a safe journey while they are away from their loved ones.
Antique Silver Mizpah Bangle - SOLD
They were predominantly produced in England and America, having been made from silver, gold or brass with either very little decoration or more complex intricate detailing. Some unique pieces also included diamonds - yet most were crafted in silver.
Not surprisingly, this jewellery gained prominence in the Victorian era - a period of romance and desire.
It was also during this period of time, that great exploration and travel occurred. During the Victorian era, Mizpah jewellery was made, most commonly in the form of rings and brooches, with some featuring just the single word, or the entire meaning inscribed.
Due to the strict rules of courting, many couples would exchange these sentimental Mizpah gifts as tokens of affection - which still met the social requirements of the days.
Although their popularity dropped following the Victorian period, they gained popularity during the Boer War and World War One; to wish soldiers a safe passage back to loved ones.
