For an engagement ring that evokes the glitz and glamour of vintage style, all while maintaining that modern and sophisticated appeal, say hello to a ‘halo’!
Since its popularisation during the Art Deco period, the ‘halo’ has evolved with multiple variations and styles. Versatile, and always popular, the options are truly endless!
So, to give you an idea of what makes this engagement ring setting so special, we’ve answered some of your most-asked questions!
WHAT IS A HALO SETTING?
The halo engagement ring design is named after the accent ‘halo’ of gemstones surrounding the ring's centre stone. The beauty of the halo style lies in the clever use of smaller gemstones to enhance the overall size, shape, and sparkle of the ring. Since the design is typically used to showcase a larger centre stone, a halo setting is the perfect frame for a more unusual gemstone cut, such as pear, emerald, heart, or marquise.

HOT TIP! Choose your diamond shape wisely! In a halo setting, emerald, oval, and marquise cut stones will elongate and cover more of the finger, whereas round, cushion, and heart-cut gemstones will give the illusion of more width.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE HALO DESIGN?
The halo design has been capturing the hearts of brides for generations, rising to popularity during the Art Deco era, during the 1920’s and 30’s. At the time, the small gemstones surrounding the centre stone were set pavé style, maximising the overall sparkle of the setting. The result was a look both classic and elegant, while also giving the illusion of a larger centre stone.
WHAT IS A DOUBLE HALO ENGAGEMENT RING?
You also may have heard of a ‘double halo’. Unlike a traditional halo design, a double halo features a second row of diamonds encircling the first. Giving the illusion of an even larger diamond, a double halo covers more of the finger, drawing even more attention to the glorious setting. For a truly glamorous look, a double halo provides that real Deco feel, and a whole lot of sparkle!
Our yellow diamond Amore and pink diamond Blush rings are perfect examples of designs that use multiple diamond halos, and their breathtaking effect!
WHAT IS A HIDDEN HALO ENGAGEMENT RING?
Alternatively, a ‘hidden halo’ engagement ring features a diamond circle not around the perimeter of the diamond, but instead, under and around the base. From above, your centre stone is the star of the show, but from the side, the hidden halo provides sparkle from a unique angle.
If you’re interested in a double or hidden halo for your engagement ring, the Bespoke design team at Gerard McCabe can work with you to customise your own one-of-a-kind design.
WHy should I choose a gerard mccabe halo engagement ring?
At Gerard McCabe, our most popular halo design, Aura, features premium cut diamonds set closely together, encircling the feature stone: a diamond or coloured gemstone. The Aura collection is designed to showcase maximum scintillation, for the most impact when worn. We have refined our halo design over the past 35 years to perfectly balance the setting elements with the gemstone. This has resulted in a look that we believe appears more delicate and sparkling, without compromising the integrity of the setting.
