HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING (TIPS FROM THE DIAMOND EXPERTS)

Engagement Rings, Advice & Information Posted by Gerard McCabe on 04/07/2023

You’re recently engaged and there’s no better feeling than that diamond sparkle! Your engagement ring is likely one of the most important pieces of jewellery in your wardrobe, so, it goes without saying, its beauty is worth the maintenance.

As an Adelaide bridal and fine diamond jeweller, this is our area of expertise!

Through years of experience, we’ve learnt that to keep your diamond engagement ring sparkling there are three things to remember:

1) Handle Your Engagement Ring With Care

Although diamonds are the hardest natural substance, they are in no way indestructible! Handling your diamond engagement ring with as much care as possible means you can avoid fractures, chips, and bruises. This means taking off your engagement ring when doing manual or dirty work, like washing the dishes, gardening, or lifting weights at the gym!

2) Clean Your Engagement Ring Regularly

The oil in our skin and the chemicals in our beauty products can mask the brilliance of the diamonds we wear. We recommend regular at-home cleaning of your engagement ring, at least once a month or every two weeks, if possible.

In a solution of warm water, detergent, and a little cloudy ammonia, leave your diamond engagement ring to soak for a few minutes, then brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Rinse with clean water, pat dry, and your diamonds are ready to wear again!

A surefire way to keep your diamond engagement ring in peak condition is to pay a visit to your jeweller. At Gerard McCabe Jewellers, we are always happy to take a look at your jewellery, check for any potential damage, and give them a professional polish at our Adelaide locations. Pop in for a complimentary clean as often as you like, but this is something we recommend doing every 6 months.

3) GIVE YOUR ENGAGEMENT RING A HOME!

One thing to always remember is that diamonds can scratch each other. For that reason, when you’re not wearing your engagement ring, avoid mixing your diamonds, and house your engagement ring in a fabric-lined jewellery box or pouch.

In our opinion, the jewellery we collect and pass on in our lifetimes deserve the utmost care. From complimentary cleaning to repairs, restorations, and valuations, there's no detail worth compromising, before or after your wedding day.
