Are you looking for an engagement ring and struggling to find exactly what you’re after? Diamond engagement ring terminology is crucial in selecting the ring of your dreams; it’s important to comprehend what the jeweller is talking about before purchasing.

We sat down with our jewellery designer and asked the frequently asked questions everyone should know the answers to…

What is a solitaire ring?

A diamond solitaire refers to a ring or any piece of jewellery that has a single diamond. The popular engagement ring design is chosen for its classic elegance and ability to showcase the beauty of the central diamond.

What is a halo diamond ring?

The halo ring is a setting that encircles a central diamond with a collection of other diamonds; so it appears as the centre diamond has a halo surrounding. This allows the central diamond to appear larger than it may be.

What is a trilogy setting?

A trilogy diamond setting is a set of three stones set alongside one another. The centre stone is often larger than the other two, which are identical in size. These stones symbolise the past, present and the future.

These questions are often accompanied by the ‘setting’ of the diamonds, with many wondering what Claw, Bezel and Pave mean…

What is a claw setting?

A claw setting is one of the most common settings for engagement rings (and other diamond or gemstone jewellery). There are usually four, or six metal prongs, which secure the diamond in place and allow the light to enter the diamonds from all angles. They are one of the optimal ways to ensure the diamond sparkles with fire, scintillation and brilliance.

What is a bezel setting?

A bezel setting is a metal frame that surrounds the edge of the centre stone, securing the diamond in place. Contrary to popular belief this setting still ensures the brilliance of the diamond is not compromised.

What is a pave setting?

Pave engagement rings feature tiny diamonds set along the band of the ring, giving the impression that the ring is of a solid diamond surface. These are a popular choice, designed to highlight the centre stone.
